Interactive Decades 1970s

Fast Food
Colonel Sanders KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (abbreviated to KFC in 1991) arrived in Australia in 1968 followed by PIZZA HUT and McDONALDS in 1970. The first pizza restaurant is said to be have been set up in Lygon Street, Melbourne by Salvatore Della Bruna in 1966. Many other restaurants open in this decade.

Cooking In The 1970s
Australians experimented more with ingredients in the 1970s. Salads were often served with pineapple, orange slices and onions. It is also the decade that the barbeque becomes established, and meats, salads and garlic bread and potatoes wrapped in foil were often served. This is also the decade of the quiche.

In the 1970s Australians were avid buyers of cookery books. The decade also saw the arrival (and, in some cases, departure) of many gadgets and new methods of cooking such as sandwich makers, food processors, slow cookers and fondue pots. Australians (still mostly women in the kitchen) spent less time preparing meals and the trend towards convenience foods continued. Diet fads are beginning to emerge.

Export Markets
In 1973 Britain along with Denmark and Ireland joined the European Economic Community (EEC) as the European Union was called then. Australia had relied on Britain as a significant market for its meat products in particular. With this change, Australia was forced to find other export markets. In 1972 Japan was Australia's biggest export market for wheat and wool.

Bar Codes
Bar codes are product codes that can be read by a computer, allowing retailers to calculate the quantities and types of products sold and alerting them when stocks run low. Bar codes were developed for the US grocery industry. By the 1970s bar codes were making a place in retailing in Australia.

  • As the name suggests, the origin of hamburgers is the German city of Hamburg. German sailors in New York asked for mince Hamburg style in the early 1900s. They were sufficiently popular by 1903 to be served at the St Louis Fair and are a firm favourite with Americans today. McDONALDS arrived in Australia in the 1970s but Australians had been eating hamburgers long before that. A recipe for Hamburg steaks (similar to hamburgers) appears in a cookbook by Mrs Maclurcan published in
    1899.
  • The 1970s saw the introduction of tea bags and the growing popularity of muesli.
  • The first 24-hour 7-ELEVEN store opens in 1977.
