Sandwich Ideas

With any weight management strategy, kilojoules count. If trying to lose weight you need to burn more kilojoules than you take in.

You may not want your sandwich to stand alone, so here are some ideas of other foods to help you round out your sandwich, along with tips about sandwich packing and safe food handling.

Enjoy!

Sandwich Sides!

Round out your sandwich with a side serving of fruit or vegetables. Health experts recommend adults get at least 7 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Wash It Down!

Include a 200ml glass of skimmed milk (252 kilojoules and a source of calcium), low kilojoule soft drink (21 kilojoules per 330ml can) or water with your sandwich. Remember, health professionals recommend 8 glasses of fluids a day.

Packing & Food Safety Tips:

  • Before handling food, wash hands in hot soapy water for at least 20 seconds (about the amount of time to slowly sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice!)
  • When packing a sandwich with lettuce or tomatoes, be sure to keep the vegies in a separate container.  This prevents bread from becoming soggy by lunchtime.
  • Kids can take part in lunch-making by putting vegies and sandwiches together themselves.
  • Keep sandwiches in plastic containers so they don’t get crushed.
  • Pack sandwiches in an insulated bag or lunch box.
  • After preparing your sandwich, remember to immediately return unused portions of perishable foods, like cheeses, deli meats and mayonnaise, to the refrigerator.
  • The maximum time leftovers can safely sit at room temperature is 30 - 60 minutes (depending on climate).  Perishable foods left un-refrigerated for more than 1 hour are a prime target for bacterial growth, and are likely to cause sickness if consumed.
